William Robert Linnell was born in Stratford on 24 April 1920, the son of Ernest and Florence (nee Humphries) Linnell.

Before the war Robert lived in New Plymouth worked as a salesman.

He enlisted in 1941 and served with the RNZAF. He later ran the Almond Paste Factory in Tariki. He died on 27 April 2004 and is buried in New Plymouth.
