Frederick Arthur Bateson Marsh was born the 10 August 1922, the son of Harold Richard and Kathleen Elizabeth (nee Jagger) Marsh of Egmont Village. He was the eldest of brothers. He attended Egmont Village School and then New Plymouth Boy’s High School before working for at LH Johnson Motors. He was also a member of the Territorials as well as a being a gifted pianist. 

Frederick sailed for the Middle East in July 1943 where he joined 25 Battalion and was sent to Italy. It was during the fierce fighting at Cassino, at the battle at Castle Hill, that Fred Marsh was killed on 15 March 1944.

No details of his death were given at the time. He died seven months after arriving from New Zealand at the age 21. He is buried in the Cassino War Cemetery.
