Alexander Richard McKay (known as Sandy) was born in Waitara on 4 May 1914. His parents were Alexander Angus (1874-1948) and Ellen Elizabeth McKay (nee Cleave) (1889-1941). He had four siblings, Jessie, Ewart, Megan and Alexa.

He worked as an owner/driver with State Taxis in New Plymouth and then married Olive Josephine Dombroski in 1938. During the World War Two he served as a private with the 19th (Wellington) Battalion. After the war he operated his own taxi business for many years.

In 1970 he married Violet Jones. Alexander died on 25 July 1980 and is buried in the Te Hēnui Services Cemetery, New Plymouth.
