Harold Badley Mundt was born 1 July 1923, the son of Arthur Robert and Mildred May Mundt of New Plymouth.

He was educated at New Plymouth Boy’s High School and was interested in planes, being a member of Western Federated Aero Club and the New Plymouth Model Aeroplane. Despite his interests, when World War Two broke out he didn’t join the RNZAF but signed up with the 25th Infantry Battalion instead.

After training in New Zealand, he was sent to Egypt and was quickly sent on to Italy. Tragically his service in Italy was very short.  He was a member of a patrol on a night-time reconnaissance when they came across the enemy. An exchange of fire took place in which Harold Mundt was killed. He was killed on 16 May 1944 and is buried at the Cassino War Cemetery. He was 21.
