Leslie John Shaw (known as Jack) was born in Hāwera on 8 March 1923. He was the son of Elizabeth (Morrison) and Leslie Shaw and was one of seven children.
When Jack left school, he worked as a linotype apprentice before enlisting in the Army during World War Two where he served in the Pacific.
When he returned home from the war he lived in New Plymouth and then married Nola Castle in 1954 and had eight children. Jack died on 12 January 1979 and is buried in the Awanui Cemetery, New Plymouth.
