Dudley Ronald Shotter grew up in the farming community of Ōkato, one of two sons of Muriel Jane (nee McCracken) and George Ronald Thomas (Ron) Shotter.

He was born on 24 June 1923 and was working as a farmhand in Ōkato in 1941 when he was called up for service.

After the war he married Norma Moore and he worked in Levin as a farmer, and then later as a storeman. He and Norma divorced in 1970 and he married Jean Mary Last.

He died on 5 April 1992 and is buried in Levin.
