This two-storey concrete building on the corner of McLean and Domett Streets was built in 1931. It replaced the original Waitara Post Office which was located on the corner of Queen and Whittaker Streets.
It was officially opened on 13 June 1931 by the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S.G.Smith, who was reported as commenting in his speech that, "he wished every town could be as fortunate as Waitara, which had scarcely any unemployed, while there were thousands in other parts of New Zealand. With its opportunities for providing work Waitara must be one of the happiest towns in the Dominion".
The contractors were Boon Bros. and the cost was £5,985.00.
In 1981 Roebuck Construction Ltd. built a single storey addition adjacent to the post office at a cost of $189,100. This is now a Post Shop, Kiwibank, and Lotto outlet.
The Post Office was sold by New Zealand Post in 1991. Until 2014 it continued to house post boxes and a mail sorting room. These were relocated in February 2014 as a recent engineering report has deemed the building earthquake-prone.
The present owner, Thelma Luxton, said in 2014 that she was determined to save the old Post Office.
