The Cross of Sacrifice in Te Hēnui Cemetery is on the ridge at the northern boundary of the Servicemen's area and close to the 57th Regiment Memorial. The Cross, presented to the city by Charles and Ann Burgess was officially unveiled by Major-General R. Young C.B, C.M.G., D.S.0., General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Military Forces in November 1927. The Burgess' were both deeply involved with returned and wounded servicemen following World War I, and their headstone is located behind the Cross.
Both Ann and Charles Burgess received MBEs in 1918 for their war work with returned and wounded soldiers. They also organised the first ANZAC Day reunion for servicemen in 1918.
