David Henry Gilroy Hawkins born in Taranaki in 1920 and was the son of Gilmore and Winifred (nee Yates) Hawkins of New Plymouth. He served in World War Two as a Sergeant with the Infantry Reinforcements and then as a Lieutenant with the Infantry Brigade as part of Jayforce from 1946 to 1948.

During WW2 he was selected for officer’s training at the Royal Military College at Aldershot and took part of New Zealand's London Victory March (Victory Parade) contingent in April 1946. He died in 1975 in Prahran, Victoria, Australia.
