Raymond James Hopkinson was the son of Arthur and Laura (nee Hughes) of New Plymouth. Arthur was a plumber in New Plymouth.
Before the war Raymond worked as a labourer and was a member of the Star Football Club. He was farewelled from the club in December 1939 along with nine other club members. Raymond had volunteered for the Infantry in September 1939 and was sent to Trentham to begin his training. He embarked for North Africa in January 1940
He served as a Private with the 19 Infantry Battalion, He was listed as having died as a result of his wounds on 28 June 1942 in the Western Desert, North Africa. He was 26 years old when he died. He is buried in the El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.
