Sydney (Syd) William Way, the son of William and Millicent Way (nee Higgs), was born on Tuesday 24 December 1918.

After attending Central School and the Boys’ High School, he trained as a law clerk in New Plymouth.

Syd played various sports, including club cricket for New Plymouth Old Boys’ and club rugby for Tukapa. He was a keen runner in the New Plymouth Harriers club, and a keen table tennis player.

When war broke out in 1939, Syd was living with his parents at 157 Lemon Street. He embarked for the Middle East in 1940, a member of the 27th Machine Gun Battalion. In 1942, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.

During the war, he married Sylvia Elizabeth Aldous. The couple had two children, son Gavin and daughter Lyndsey. One record shows another daughter, Pamela.

Syd and Sylvia returned to New Plymouth after the war, and Syd recommenced work as a law clerk. He died on 17 December 2003.
